You ask the driver to stop — there’s Grandma’s house, just ahead.

As you step into the yard, the dog starts barking — he’s already forgotten you since the last school holidays.

Grandma comes out of the summer kitchen, smiling wide.

You shout, “Hi!”

And she echoes back, even longer — “Hiiiii!”

She hugs and kisses you, beaming with joy.

Then she calls you into the house.

A few quick questions — “How was the road?”, “What’s new?” — and suddenly she gasps with wide eyes.

Of course — the child must be fed immediately.

She hurries to the kitchen to bring out everything she’s made.

The smell of baked pastries has been drifting from the summer oven since you arrived — it wraps around the yard.

They’re already on the table, tucked under a towel.

The scent of cherries is dizzying.

You’re in heaven.

You grab a warm pyrih, sit on the bench under the kitchen window, and watch as Grandma pours water for the geese.

They rush over, necks stretched out, drinking like they’ve been thirsty forever.

“Well? Are the pies good?” she asks.

You just nod silently and keep eating.
